Chapter Twelve

We lie in wait, observing the magic detector, a blue beacon of light situated on a pole erected above the small cave entrance near the top of the mountain. We came to neutralize the detector so we can cross the mountain range undetected while I set up wards around our camp. Wards require the use of specialized sigils that emit magical signatures I believe the beacons can pick up on.

The king wouldn’t expect us to risk scaling Mount Havensi only to raid this small, nearly defenseless location. There’s no gold or riches here, only a stupid blinking light, but the king considers us animals who raid for food and shelter, so he wouldn’t know what we’d want in the first place.

For one, he suspects we wouldn’t notice the clever use of Stenan beacons as magic detectors. And that we wouldn’t pay attention to the glowing lights at the top of his flagpoles all around the land. Would have ignored it had it not been for that one soldier back a moon ago who stabbed me in the thigh with the flagpole. The sharp end of the pole pierced my flesh, and when he jabbed me harder, the beacon entered my muscle along with the entire tip of the pole.

I got the pole out of my thigh right after I ripped the soldier’s heart out of his rib cage. After the battle, I tended to my wounds and dug out a broken blue beacon. It reeked of magic that wasn’t mine and made my wound fester for spans.

It was then I decided not to raid with the horde, but to remain outside the villages and towns, watching the raid from the highest nearby point. The blue beacons kept appearing, and any use of our magic made them light up red instead of blue. We stopped using sigils when I figured out these beacons were connected and they were sending information back to the king, who then deployed soldiers to our location. Or worse, medeisars.

The soldier who gave up the location of this beacon surrendered right after Neensei ripped his gut open, so the information about the post being unguarded is questionable.

The entrance to the cave appears crafted instead of a naturally formed part of the mountain. This tells me men made it. It’s a small opening, however, barely large enough for an adult male to pass through. It would be rather uncomfortable and stupid for soldiers to have to squeeze in and out of their posts. Naturally, this strange opening worries me. I don’t like things I don’t know, and there’s so much about this new world I don’t know. However, I’ll learn as I encounter the strangeness, beacons and inefficient little entries included.

Either way, something’s here along with the beacon, and we intend to check it out. If the king’s post is full of his males, we’ll kill the soldiers and neutralize the beacon. But there’s more here than a beacon and a few males. Warmth is spreading over my skin, wanting to mingle with my sigils.
